OUR SYNTHETIC FABRICS, MADE FROM OCEAN WASTE
The amount of plastic (including synthetic fabric) manufactured from 2000-2010 was on par with the total produced in the entire last century. After most likely only being used once or twice, this plastic was left in landfill to release toxins for the next few thousand years. So how do we help fix this? We use only the highest of quality recycled synthetic fabrics.
Our soft & durable recycled nylon is constructed in Italy and made from industrial and post-consumer waste such as fishnets, carpets, plastic bottles and textiles that would otherwise pollute our beautiful land and oceans. It is certified Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex; the world’s leader in testing fabrics to regulate harmful substances.
Our fabric supplier uses the world’s most efficient industrial system for the production of Nylon 6 from 100% regenerated waste materials.
As well as..
- 50% lower carbon footprint than organic cotton.
- 90% less carbon footprint than nylon.
- Using more recycled polyester reduces our dependence on petroleum as the raw material for our fabric needs.
With every tonne of recycled fabric we create, we save:
- 7 barrels of crude oil
- 5.7 tonnes of CO2 eq. emissions
Diverting discarded plastic for this process reduces landfill, and thus less soil contamination, air and water pollution. All of this helps to support a cleaner ocean!
WHAT ABOUT YOUR DYE?
Our water-based dyes have achieved accreditation to the Global Organic Textiles Standard (GOTS), OEKO-TEX® and CLEAR TO WEAR certification schemes. We use only water based inks to achieve our swimwear’s rich and vibrant colours. Water based inks are proven to be a more eco friendlier dying option in comparison with commercial plastisol inks which contain PVC and phthalates that are harmful to the environment + have been linked to numerous medical disorders. Yikes.
PACKAGING
An estimated 65 billion parcels were sent in 2016 with a majority of those being plastic. These parcels pose just as much of a problem as a single-use plastic bag, and yet they go largely ignored. Well, at least not by us. While we've always used a more eco-friendly option when it comes to parcels (recycled or made from paper), as of early last year we've been hand-packing and kissing our swimsuits goodbye in compostable satchels made from 100% biodegradable and compostable materials.
These materials include corn starch, PLA (synthesised from corn) and PBAT (Polybutyrate Adipate Terephthalate). PLA (Polylactide) is a bio-based, biodegradable material made from renewable plant material (starches such as corn husks, rice straw and wheat straw).
And the best part.. it can be composted at home! The parcel can join your food scraps, garden waste or other organic matter to decompose in your very own backyard (or compost bin)! Packaging doesn't stop at parcels, however.
Our swing tags are made from recycled paper, our swing tag string is deadstock yarn, and all of our swimsuits are carefully placed into home compostable (and plastic free) poly bags. Our hygiene stickers are made from recycled paper. Our products also come to us from our suppliers packed in our home-compostable polybags, no plastic here!
SHIPPING
- We purchase carbon offsets so our worldwide shipping is carbon neutral, as well as the majority of deliveries we receive to HQ.
- Our postage satchels come with a resealable strip in the event any of our customers need to make an exchange or return. The strip covering the adhesive is recycled and recyclable plastic, and the rest of the satchel is fully compostable.
IN THE OFFICE
At Baiia HQ, we separate all waste into their correct bins (rubbish, recycling, soft plastics + compost) as well as encourage the use of reusables for staff lunches and coffee breaks. Our cleaning wipes are also planet safe and biodegradable, made from bamboo with no harsh ingredients.
We believe the best way to find your perfect fit is to: measure your bust, waist and hips and use the chart below to find the size your dimensions best line up with.
Fits may differ due to body torso length and height. Please get in touch with fitexpert@baiia.com.au for questions relating to fit & size.
Please note that due to the thickness of our fabrics and our suit's shape controlling properties, they should feel quite snug or tight initially - especially when first putting on. The nature of these fabrics are to soften to your shape after a few wears, making them much more comfortable once worn in, particularly around the hip area. Swimwear fabric naturally also becomes more generous in stretch when in contact with water.
Our sizes are true to standard Australian sizing, however they are a firmer fit initially to allow for any softening of the fabric. If you have two or more measurements within one size, we generally recommend that one for the perfect fit. Due to our signature three-piece design, torso length does not often affect your size in the same way a traditional one-piece design might, however, women who identify as being 'shorter' generally find more success going a size down if they are between sizes.
